We are known for our motorized axial compression columns, such as the EasyPack and InPlace columns. First proposed by VERDOT in 1988, motorized axial compression is now implemented in all the premium columns on the market.

Axial compression provides the highest quality, most reproducible packed beds for process scale chromatography. Axial compression is today recognized as the best packing method for the process chromatography columns with a diameter D20cm and greater.
Refer to the Video and to the Packing SOP to learn more about it.

Low pressure liquid chromatography process applications with packed bed usually provide the highest resolution. This is paramount for isocratic mode, and reduces the dilution of the product fractions.

The preparation of the media in the column depends on the application, industry and media used. The “packing” operation usually refers to the operation starting with media in slurry form and ending with a homogeneous chromatography bed  between the 2 distributors in the column, qualified with HETP test.

Some applications don’t require packing:

  • Food media with large particles (200-800µm) are usually transferred dry in the column for settling, without requiring slurrying and packing. The bed is usually tall (0.8-5m) and is often subject to swelling/shrinking when the mobile phase changes. A space between the top distributor and the bed is left for the swelling phenomenon and for regeneration in countercurrent, which expands the bed.
  • Applications with agitated columns usually involve some steps in agitated mode (product adsorption, regeneration) and steps in settled mode.
  • Application in expanded mode also involves steps in expansion and steps in settled mode.
